Magnetische Eigenschappen van Organo-Metallische Clusters (Magnetic properties of organo-metallic clusters), MSc Thesis, Leiden, The Netherlands, September 1988 (unpublished)

Summary

Organo-metallic clusters consist of a core of metal atoms surrounded by a shell of ligands. These ligands should prevent the metal cores to react with each other or their environment. Metal clusters have sizes between that of an atom and bulk material. These clusters are interesting for solid-state-physicists because it enables them to study the nature of metallic behaviour.

In the theoretical part the magnetism of small magnetic clusters in a weak magnetic field is investigated using a simple model of electrons in a spherical particle with radius a.

In the experimental part the magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation measurements for three different clusters are reported and discussed: Ni34(CO)38C4H[N(C2H5)]5, Pd561Phen36O200, and Au55(PPh3)12Cl20.
